The best version to read, in my opinion is the 1611 King James, it is the original translation from Aramaic, Koine Greek and Hebrew. The challenge with the english language is that it is a bastardized language. Words change meaning from year to year in some cases.
Consider the work Meek, today the word refers to a passive person, where in Hebrew this word meant power under control. God referred to Moses as the meekest man on the earth. By todays standards Moses would not be a man of courage where when God referred to Him, it was the entire difference.
The etymology of language is a major aspect in exegesis, or interpretation of scripture, when you read what might seem to be easier translations, may in fact change the interpretation of scripture all together.
When you consider the manuscripts, the bible itself has no punctuations, word interpretations add a dimension that should be considered if you want to understand scripture in context.
