The Apostle John was the son of Zebedee and the younger brother of James, referred to as James the Greater. Their mother was Salome.
Zebedee and his sons fished in the Sea of Galilee. The brothers were first disciples of John the Baptist. Jesus then called Peter, Andrew and these two to follow him. James and John are among the Twelve Apostles. Jesus referred to the pair as "Boanerges" ("sons of thunder")
John is the author of the gospel of John, the Epistles of John and the book of Revelation. Sacrosanct to this are the designations attributed to him as John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, John the Elder and the Beloved Disciple.
John is the only Apostle to have died of old age around AD 100, while the other Apostles were killed and martyred.
Matthew 4:18-22
18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
Mark 3:17
17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:
John is also referred to as the one Jesus loved.
John 20:2
“Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.”
He was exiled to the isle of Patmos.
Revelation 1:9
“I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.”
